Self Esteem

Self Esteem

Are you often your own worst critic, do you often feel unworthy or even when you achieve something somehow feel unable to give yourself the credit you deserve? We all have ups and downs when our self esteem isn't as high as it should be. Many of my clients will have experienced low self esteem and it is often an underlying problem of many issues from weight gain to anxiety disorders.

When our self esteem is high we find it easier to face life's challenges, enjoy social interaction, open up new possibilities, take risks and most of all feel happier and content. None of us are born with low self esteem, but quite often the seeds of self doubt are sown at an early age by not only hurtful comments or put downs by others but also their behaviour towards us. We judge the situation through the eyes of a child and take what they say or do as a reflection on ourselves. The assumptions we make at this point can strongly impact on our self worth in later life. It is also quite common to develop negative labels for ourselves such as 'I'm a failure' or 'I'm not good enough'. We may not always be aware of these thoughts as they can become so automatic to our way of thinking.

When our self esteem is low we may often withdraw from social activities, set impossible goals that set us up failure, lose the ability to notice our good points, find it difficult to take criticism in either our professional or private life. It may be more difficult to meet people, interview for a job, or strive for success in the face of possible failure. Having low self esteem will take an enormous toll on the quality of your life as you weave your way through trying to avoid anything that could aggravate the pain that you are feeling.

How to improve self esteem

Using hypnotherapy techniques such as ego strengthening and confidence building are great ways of boosting your self esteem as these work by using positive suggestions to reprograme the unconscious mind and replace negative thought patterns. Other techniques such as cognitive behaviour therapy are also very effective in making the client aware of his or her own negative thought patterns and challenging negative and limiting beliefs through regular sessions, homework and practical exercises. We all deserve to feel good and to appreciate and celebrate our uniqueness as human beings in our right. It is important to remember that self esteem is not something we need to strive for but is truly about learning to love and accept who we are.
